My research is concerned with the evolution of social, political and economic life, as well as environmental factors, in Zambia and how that evolution is affected by an increased foreign presence, primarily Chinese and Indian (through foreign aid, foreign direct investment and immigration). In particular, I am interested in the question of how new (perhaps mostly weak) ties between Zambian companies and Chinese investors and collaborators, influence people's career opportunities and actual career outcomes, as well as how the increased Chinese presence changes how the various Zambian ethnic, cultural and faith groups relate with each other. http://www.columbia.edu/~jac2130

Lecturer/Coordinator, The University of the South Pacific, Fiji
Priya Chattier is currently a Gender Studies Coordinator at the University of the South Pacific. She completed her PhD in Sociology at the Australian National University in 2008. Her doctoral research explored the dynamics of survival, self-respect and agency in the lived experiences of women living in poverty in rural Fiji. Priya's work is located at the intersections of academic and activist work on gender equality, women's economic empowerment, gender relations, Hindu womanhood and Hinduism, and social change in contemporary Fiji and the Pacific Island Countries. Her recent publications focus on the capability approach and gender-sensitive measures of poverty and also on Indian diaspora, gender and Hinduism in Fiji. She is also involved in various research projects including an Australian Research Council research grant for Fiji-based fieldwork on Assessing Development: Designing Better Indices for Poverty and Gender Equity and was a lead researcher for World Bank qualitative rapid assessment in Fiji informing the World Development Report 2012 on 'gender and economic choice'.

I'm interested in the ethics of development assistance with specific regard to governance and rule of law reform. I'm also concerned with conflict between between Westphalian sovereignty and legal reform and the protection of human rights. Most recently, I am interested in the status of the rule of law in the United States after the policies implemented during the last decade generally known as the "War On Terror."

My research focuses on the demography and sociology of inequality within sub-Saharan Africa. This work follows two directions (1) assessing the buffering from informal institutions such as child fosterage and (2) examining the disequalizing influences of demographic change and development projects. My field work will cover several countries, including participation in a multi-disciplinary project in Zambia where I use the capability approach to explore change in wellbeing and inequality associated with rapid economic growth in rural communities.

I am currently contracted to perform socio-technical integration research (STIR), an NSF-funded program to bring ethicists and ethnographers into scientific laboratories. I am currently embedded in a lab at the National Institute for Materials Science in Tsukuba, Japan. The laboratory personnel are all Hindus from rural India who care deeply about applying their research to the improvement of social systems in India and elsewhere. We are working to apply Sen and Nussbaum's capabilities approaches to thinking about the commercialization of research and the development of interdisciplinary international research centers across India in the coming years. I have a professional science master's (PSM) degree in Science & Technology Policy (December 2012) from the Consortium for Science, Policy, & Outcomes at Arizona State University. Master's Thesis -- "Social Business Model Innovation: An Emerging Science and Technology Policy Pathway?" Committee: Dr. Erik Fisher, Dr. David Guston, Dr. Clark Miller, and G. Pascal Zachary. My thesis combined the work of Muhammad Yunus, Sheila Jasanoff, and Clayton Christensen with analyses of regional economic developments in the United States to explore the possibility of implementing a research programme in "social business model innovation" in the New American University.

Title of the thesis: "Socio-ecological vulnerability and sustainable development in metropolitan areas, what kind of opportunities can Biosphere Reserves (Unesco MAB program) offer?". 1- Crossing the capability approach with the Critical Natural Capital theory in order to describe a new assessment space of well-being which is truly integrating the 3 pillars of sustainable development and the political dimension as well. 2- Operationalisation of this new space of assessment through elaborating an adaptive method for biosphere reserve management in metropolitan areas.

I am interested in studying the relationships between weather & climate, human-environment interactions, and health outcomes in a place, particularly those related to El Niño. I am also interested in understanding population vulnerability and why certain populations or groups of people are more susceptible to the untoward effects of climatic events compared to others who live in similar locations.
