Thematic Groups

The Human Development and Capability Association encourages researchers who share common interests to organize thematic groups. At present, eight thematic groups are active. If you are involved in a similar thematic group, or if you would like to start one, please read and complete the following document and hence contact us at info@hd-ca.org. Please know that the thematic groups currently work only in English.

Select Group
Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous peoples have historically been the poorest and most excluded populations in many parts of the world. They have suffered serious discriminations in terms of their basic rights to land, resources, language, culture, citizenship, access to basic services as well as the denial of essential conditions to lead a healthy and satisfying life.

The main objective of this thematic group is to investigate how the capability approach can be applied in the context of indigenous issues, at the theoretical and practical level. At the theoretical level, we intend to explore how the capability approach can be applied as a theoretical framework to analyse indigenous peoples' rights and well-being. At the practical level, we propose to investigate whether and to what extent the capability approach can contribute to further indigenous holistic concept of development in the design, implementation and evaluation of development policies.

The research activities aim to investigate not only individual capabilities but also better understand and value capabilities that are shared by a social group or community. The group emphasizes the use of participatory research methods to enable indigenous peoples to fully participate in any research activities in order to allow them to define their priorities (set of capabilities) for their self-defined human development.

Plan of Action 2007/2008
I would like to thank all speakers and members who have participated at the special panel session of HDCA Thematic Group on Indigneous Peoples at the 2007 Conference in New York!! I would like to invite you to join our Thematic Group in order to strengthen the network of researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and all people interested to explore how the capability framework can be applied, theoretically and practically, to address major challenges facing indigenous peoples. The main goal of the HDCA Thematic Group on Indigenous Peoples is to contribute to the analysis, research, implementation of initiatives supporting and/or assisting indigenous peoples to live their life according to their choices. This thematic group provides a real opportunity to exchange ideas and share perspectives and experiences among indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. If you would like to become a member of out thematic group, please send an email to the coordinator Francesca Panzironi at f.panzironi@usyd.edu.au in order to be listed in the group.
